How we’ll work together
“I don't teach you to translate — I teach you to stop, because that half-second you spend converting in your head is where every conversation dies. We build the muscle the way I built mine in Oaxaca: making mistakes out loud, fast, in front of someone, until the Spanish arrives before the English does. Fluency isn't a finish line; it's the night you catch yourself dreaming in the subjunctive.”
A little background
Robyn’s story
Robyn grew up speaking kitchen-table Spanish in Santa Fe — enough to follow her grandmother's stories, never enough to answer them. To close that gap she spent a year in Oaxaca apprenticing at a barro negro pottery studio in San Bartolo Coyotepec, throwing clay eight hours a day with people who didn't slow down for her. The language reached her hands before it ever reached a textbook, and she came home and switched her undeclared ASU major to Spanish Linguistics. Her senior thesis recorded oral histories from elders in Chimayó to document the New Mexican Spanish dialect her family speaks — a variety so old it preserves words that vanished from Mexico City Spanish centuries ago. She teaches that same dialect's stubbornness: language is a thing you do, not a thing you memorize.
What students say
977 ratings“My daughter walked into Robyn's sessions with a 71 in AP Spanish and walked out of the exam with a 5. Robyn drilled the subjunctive triggers until they were automatic, then made her record a one-minute voice memo en espanol after every single lesson. That one habit is what did it — by April she was narrating her commute to the bus stop in Spanish without being asked.”
“I flunked the conversational portion of my study-abroad placement twice. Robyn flat-out refused to let me speak English for the last 20 minutes of every session — I'd be sweating, hunting for the word for 'refund,' and she'd just wait. Passed on the third try and got bumped into the advanced track in Sevilla. Still not sure how she did it.”
“Por vs. para had wrecked me for two years. Robyn threw out the rules and drew me a little map — para is the arrow pointing at the destination, por is everything the arrow passes through. I went from guessing on every quiz to a 94 on the unit test. I only knock off a fraction of a star because I'm mad I didn't find her sooner.”
Before your first session
How does Robyn run a Spanish session?
Robyn adapts each Spanish session to the student's current assignment, exam, or goal.
Can this nerd remember past sessions?
Yes. Nerdy can save important notes, goals, preferences, and breakthroughs so future sessions can pick up with more context.
Can I get practice tests and study materials?
Yes. The session toolbox can generate practice tests, flashcards, diagrams, and study notes when they fit the lesson.
