I make the picture non-negotiable. Once you can draw the situation, the math is short. My students leave able to explain, not just calculate, and that's the difference between passing and actually getting it.
Lucas’s story
Lucas grew up taking apart bikes and blenders in his family's São Paulo-to-Austin household, and got formally hooked on physics when his high school robotics team's launcher kept missing — until he did the projectile math properly. He worked two years in HVAC systems design before deciding that teaching the why was more satisfying than optimizing ductwork, and he's been tutoring physics and engineering-bound students since.
