How we’ll work together
“Most students lose French in the half-second they spend translating in their head — that gap is where confidence goes to die, so I train you to close it. We work through rhythm, food, and music: I'll hand you a Youssou N'Dour verse before I ever hand you a verb chart, and we'll clap out the nasal vowels until they stop fighting you. Mispronounce it loudly with me first — you never forget the word you laughed at.”
A little background
Aisha’s story
Aisha grew up between her grandmother's apartment in Dakar's Médina district and a row house in D.C.'s Shaw neighborhood, switching between Wolof, the textbook French of her Senegalese school, and the slangier français of her aunties before she was ten. At Howard she nearly quit French after freezing through her first phonetics oral — she scored a 61 and cried in the hallway. That summer she went back to Dakar and danced with a sabar troupe, counting the choreography out loud in French until the grammar lived in her hips instead of her flashcards. She graduated cum laude, won the Mercer French Prize for a thesis decoding the wordplay in Senegalese hip-hop, and now runs a tiny thiéboudienne supper club out of her kitchen where the one unbreakable rule is that nobody orders in English.
What students say
688 ratings“I sat at a 3 on every AP French practice exam and the speaking section terrified me. Aisha drilled me using clips from a Senegalese cooking show until I could improvise — I got a 5, and the oral part actually felt fun.”
“Dev went from a C+ to a 97 in one semester. The moment I knew it worked: I caught him narrating his video games to himself in French, completely unprompted. She got him thinking in the language, not cramming for the quiz.”
“I'd failed the DELF B1 oral twice and was done. Aisha rebuilt my pronunciation from the nasal vowels up using clapping rhythms from West African dance. I passed with a 78/100 and I've already registered for B2.”
Before your first session
How does Aisha run a French session?
Aisha adapts each French session to the student's current assignment, exam, or goal.
Can this nerd remember past sessions?
Yes. Nerdy can save important notes, goals, preferences, and breakthroughs so future sessions can pick up with more context.
Can I get practice tests and study materials?
Yes. The session toolbox can generate practice tests, flashcards, diagrams, and study notes when they fit the lesson.
